Custom-made typeface

Inspired from the 1981 Atari arcade game Tempest, we first made a non-rounded version for the Environ Selective Amnesia CD packaging design in 2008. Recently we made a rounded version for the Kyoto University of Art & Design Uryutsushin magazine redesign. Improving on the design so we can easily change the appearance by turing on and off each colour layer (or letter outlines), which creates some interesting forms.

Type and sign collection book

Typogaki is an ongoing project realised as part of the Design as medium (formerly Design Workshop) class, taught at IAMAS (Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences). The title, ‘Typogaki’—a portmanteau of Typography & Ogaki—denotes the typography of Ogaki city, home to IAMAS.

Since 2006, the Typogaki project has annually investigated a different part of Ogaki city, with over 2000 photographs compiled to date. This book is a digest of these images, shedding some light on the urban history. Walk around any city and you will see evidence of our changing society; like design, cities evolve over time, reflecting economic and political circumstance. Ogaki, having seen more prosperous times, is undergoing urban, industrial, and generational shift. With revitalisation often meaning out-with-the-old, and modernisation the move towards more homogenised presentation, it’s increasingly important to document these local designs before they’re lost.

This book was produced in association with the BICA Committee. An Ogaki Biennale 2008 project.

Kyoto University of Art and Design magazine

Following our earlier work for Kyoto University of Art and Design, we were asked to art direct the redesign of Uryutsushin magazine. We worked alongside the students to create a design and process, which would allow the students to create each issue with our guidance. Looking again at every detail of the design, from the paper stock, to the typefaces (both Japanese and English). We also designed a custom-made font (Bonus Rounded) for the titles – allowing each issue to have its own character by changing the accent colours.

A website for a restaurant in Gion, Kyoto

Kawakami, a restaurant in Gion, Kyoto with a long history and an enviable reputation. As part of our work for Kawakami, we initially designed their website. One of the most important parts of this was reflecting the changing seasonal menu. Rather than showing the food itself, we chose to display the decorative plates which also change according to the menu.

With literally hundreds of beautifully decorated plates, some being as old as, if not older than the restaurant itself, it was to become a fascinating discovery.

Furthermore as part of the restaurant’s redesign, we commissioned the new logo from Hidetoshi Mito, who is well-known for his unique ‘sho’ ink & brush work.

Packaging for tea company

We first met Kojima-san from Uji-Koen tea company, during our exhibition at The Green in 2007. As a collector of our designs for the Clear record label more than 10 years ago, Kojima-san invited us to work with him for his tea company’s packaging. Being quintessentially Japanese, we were very sensitive to the company’s history—producing tea in the Uji area of Kyoto since 1865—and the very loyal customer base.

After several diluting changes in the company’s logo over the years, we reverted to and re-drew the original logo to be used from this point forward. Bridging the gap between the new and familiar designs, which customers have recognised and trusted for many years. The renewed logo balanced with a geometric pattern debossed and varnished into specially sourced white card, creating a subtle, yet distinct branding. This new package, each holding one packet of tea, is presented to customers in their store in Osaka.

Letterpress & debossed card

When our good friend, Manabu Kōnushi asked us to design his wedding party invitation, we decided to use our favourite printer in Kyoto, Juppunya, whose vintage Heidelberg letterpress printer can do some extraordinary things.

For the front design we made a pattern of dots, based on the stroboscope of a Technics 1210 turntable. This pattern was blind debossed into 1mm ‘cushion card’ using the same Heidelberg press which then printed the reverse of the card in black ink. Such a simple process, on such a beautiful old machine, can still give us such beautiful results.

Custom-made typeface

We created this typeface to be used for the IAMAS Gangu Project’s AXIS exhibition’s promotional material. The Gangu Project focused on creating new electronic toys for children, so we wanted to create a font with a futuristic, yet playful feel. Taking inspiration from Wim Crouwel’s 1967 typeface New Alphabet and combining it with a block metaphor to create Wimblock.
